Luckily, I have been able to get that one under control. But I have noticed this trend in other areas of my life. Writing is not an exception. I hadn't written anything at all last week. Then Sunday rolls around. I woke up at 5:30 in the morning with a fight scene, that one I have been too intimidated to write, running through my head. I couldn't let it go, so I started typing away. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out too! I pretty much wrote all day yesterday. With a total of 7,750 words, more or less. Great for my writing goal, but major fail in terms of moderation.
I also woke up this morning with conversations going on in my head. I have a notebook by my bed, but I never seem to use it. If I write just little points about what I was seeing I would lose a lot of it. So, I got out of bed and started typing away at the computer. I was so happy with my 1,000 words this morning, but now I'm ready for a nap. Only problem, which always seems to be so inconvenient, is that I have to work 'till 5.
Another thing that I have been thinking about, because my CP Heather Hildenbrand mentioned it today on her blog, is the stats for blog traffic. I was amazed at how much my stats grew when I got my cover and revamped my blog. The key to my blog traffic has been to get yo cover, pimp yo blog (in the melody of Antoine Dodson's "Hide yo kids, Hide yo wife"-- see video below if you are not laughing right now).
So, here's a shout out to all of you who have supported me thus far by reading my blog, giving me feedback, and being part of my little writer world.
Oh, one more thing! Check out my Goodreads widget on the side of my blog. Go ahead and click it to add Descended by Blood to your "to-read" shelf.
I don't write in moderation either. Honestly if I was forced to write a certain amount of words every day, I think I would grow to hate writing. I've had 7K+ days too...with little to nothing in between. Sometimes I *need* to stop & think & wonder & dream before I can write one word.
ReplyDeleteI say that as long as you're writing and getting through the book, then who cares what pace you're working at?
I agree with Megg, some days I'd rather plaster my laptop to the wall, and others I want to sit and write all day. Just do want feels natural to you. Don't try to go fast, nor try to write slow, just go with the flow. :o) HA! That rhymed!
ReplyDeleteThose 7k days wipe me out!!! I totally feel you on the work thing - try working 11am - 8pm :(
ReplyDeleteAlso, is this the link you were aiming for? I happened to click it while the other one was playing :)
J. E. Medrick
oh wow- i clicked the goodreads link and read your synopsis. I LOVED IT! (I hadnt seen it before now) so I wanted to tell you that you did a great job with it. Just the right amount of info to get me interested. =)
ReplyDeleteI suffer from the same problem. Lack of time makes me write like crazy when do get to it. I try to sneak it in a work, since I work 50 hours a week.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your blog!
I feel the same way! I always feel guilty when I'm going through a writing drought and then ecstatic when I get a flood of words coming from my fingertips! The ups and downs of writing....gotta love 'em!! At least us writers are all in the same boat and can support each other through our tweets, blogs, and books!!
ReplyDelete@ Megg & Megan: Thanks for you support! It's always nice to have someone else's perspective on things.
ReplyDelete@Medrick: Oh man, I hear ya on the long days. On days I have school, I am gone from 7:30 am until 8:30 pm. I was kind of talking about the video you linked to, but that video isn't going to be as funny to someone who didn't know what I was talking about, unless they watched the video I linked. How's the edits coming?
@Heather: I emailed this to you, but I will link it here to for others if they would like it. I used Karen McQuestion's method for my book's blurb

@kmullican: Thanks for stopping by! Hope to see ya around ;)
@Amy: Glad you stopped by! Thanks for you support. I added you to my list of writers ;)

ReplyDeleteDon't you just love it when that happens because you have to get it down while it's coming out. If you haven't seen Elizabeth Gilbert's TED video, check it out. She kind of touches on this when she talks about the muse and creativity.
Don't feel too bad. Moderation isn't always what it's cracked up to be. Good ahead. Pat yourself on the back.
