“Oh, thank Dagda! I have been searching for hours and have become weary. You are the only person I have stumbled upon in two days!”
“’Igh, Aengus, you come here to cause me trouble? I’m up to me skivvies in dis here water. What make ye tink I’m gonna help ye?”
“Please, Murtagh. I’m looking for my one true love, Caer. You must have seen her. I need you to tell me where I can find her.
“’Igh! Ye fair maiden. ’Igh. Yes, yes, I know where she be. But a price, a price ye pay in gold to find ye fair maiden.”
Aengus pulls a coin from his pocket. “Here. Please, take it and lead me to her!”
Murtagh’s eyes light up. “I seen ye fair maiden over by da light post near da tall mushrooms trail. Follow me. Follow me.”
Murtagh grabs the coin from Aengus and leads him away, skipping and hopping while twisting and twirling his shiny new coin in the moonlight.
When they reach the light post, Murtagh puts the coin under his hat. A clink and clang rattles below the brim and the hat changes shape and color. What was black is now a dark green with a golden buckle on the front.
Aengus growls. “No more games, Murtagh! I gave you the coin. Now take me to her at once!”
Murtagh scratches his head and his hat wiggles as if alive. “’Igh, but ye paid me to lead ye to her. Where she was and where she be are not da same. Where she was will cost ye one, but where she be will cost ye a ton.”
Aengus reaches behind his back and pulls a satchel off his shoulder. He releases the tie and gold spills out. “Now tell me, Murtagh, where can I find Caer?”
Murtagh squeals and jumps in the air, clicking his heels together and then rushes to the pile of coins on the ground. He fingers the gold, causing the coins to dance along his knuckles. “Dis be a fine ton! Ye maiden followed de moonlight, through de mountain’s valley, and over the monster’s back.”
Aengus looks out over the valley, and without turning back to Murtagh, he takes off at a breakneck speed.
Murtagh scoops up the gold and carries it back to his secret hiding spot. When he reaches his pot of gold, he dumps his treasure into the pot. He takes three coins from a file on the ground and places them under his hat. The hat jingles and jangles and shivers and shakes. The brim pops up and covers his head with a bright green hat and an extra shiny buckle.
“I may have lied to da lad. But only dis much,” he says as he pinches his thumb to his finger and laughs over his pot of gold.
